Every political commentator is rejoicing at the results of the just concluded DDC elections. From roof tops it is being declared that the people of J&K have finally given their approval for abrogation of Art 370. A closer look at the results may have a different story to tell.
1. The results show a near clean political divide between Jammu & Kashmir regions. But for the 3 seats that the BJP won in the Valley, it would have been a Black & White spectrum. Thanks to 3 seats, a shade of grey has infiltrated the region separating the White from Black.
2. BJP has got a toe hold in the valley & that's a very important political development.
3. That the BJP swept Jammu region is no surprise, because in the last Assembly elections too BJP had done so.
4. The most important outcome is that the Gupkar Gang has managed to grab 100 seats, of which NC has got about 68 seats.
The Gupkar Agenda:
Every one knows that the constituents of the Gang didn't accept abrogation of 370 & 35 A. In this context, it is imperative to analyse the meaning of 100 seats in the light of their overt stand against the said abrogations.
That they had to contest collectively, is acceptance of the ground realities about their waning mass support; nevertheless, 100 is a big number as it is basically indicative of the % of the voters that elected their candidates & therefore a plausible estimate of what % of the populace ( x times the number of voters) in Kashmir have rejected the said abrogations.
The Political Challenge:
The results have shown that the game is not over yet & that opposition to the abrogations may become more vocal in the time to come, as the PDP & NC have exhibited enough of nuisance value in their history of existence.
So, while BJP may celebrate (for 3 seats in the Valley) the political challenge thrown up by the tormentors of J&K people is no myth.
The Development Doctrine:
Not all seem to be enthused by the prospects of growth & development promised to be ushered in by those at the helm in the Center. The false narrative ( about the Art. 370) post 1966, that governed the politics of the erstwhile J&K state & also defined its relationship with the Central Government, continues to live within a section of the society, howsoever small percentage wise. The Gang has succeeded in exploiting that sentiment so vigorously ingrained in them over the decades.
Therefore, can it be stated that the challenge staring at us is not just the economic development & growth in the region, but more than that, to overturn the false political narrative (based on Pakistan's propaganda) that kept fuelling the fires of separatism in Kashmir & ended up traumatising the whole society.
