Well Done Gupkar Gang You Kept Your Inheritance Spotless

Lalit K Kaul

While Sheikh Mohd Abdullah is awaiting the “Kayamat Ka Din”/ “The Day of Judgement” in his grave for his possible journey to the Jannat to have a rendezvous with 72 Hoors, his brand of politics has been kept alive by his generation next and the other political parties too have chosen to take a leaf out of his political legacy. Sheikh’s politics was time variant and he had mastered the art of ‘running with the hare and hunting with the hound’. In his quest to gain political power his first master stroke was to change the name of his political outfit ‘Muslim Conference’ to ‘National Conference’ as that helped him gain proximity to the leaders of Indian National Congress who had been leading the independence struggle against the British rule in India.

His rationale, logic, ethics, morals in the context of his political aspirations followed the swing of a pendulum; his narrative on J&K in regard to the Indian Union depended upon his physical location. While crossing over from Qazigund to Ramban he had one narrative; quite the opposite of it he adopted while crossing over from Ramban to Qazigund; implying that whatever he agreed to with Indian political leadership in Delhi that was to be negated in its totality in Srinagar – the den of “Sher-i-Kashmir”. He paid a price for it in the year 1953, but avenged that disgrace after gaining political power post Indira Sheikh Accord of 1974. Those who tried to dig his grave in the enthusiasm of “Hum Kya Chahte Azadi” should have known that Sheikh had laid very strong foundations for the secessionist movement that was to be witnessed for more than three decades in the erstwhile state of J&K; his generation next carried his mission very deftly while ruling the state almost uninterruptedly. Even the chameleon would have envied the guile with which Sheikh and his descendents changed their colours and adopted the one based on their physical location.

Silence if Observed is worth its value in Gold:

Sheikh was master in the art of observing silence tantamount to acquiescence in whatever the Central leadership had to offer on - what he considered his fiefdom - J&K. In Kashmiri language there is this saying which when translated in to English may read like “Silence is worth its value in Silver, if observed its worth is in Gold”. Gupkar Gang meticulously followed this saying in their meeting with the PM and HM in New Delhi on 24 06 2021. As per media reports and political analysts none of them raised any issue(s) about so called abrogation of Art 370 and 35A; none talked about Pak as a stake holder in the erstwhile state of J&K. The question that begs an answer is: Why those who 24x7 talked about reinstating 370 and 35A and declared Pak as a stake holder did not raise it with the PM and HM in the said meeting?

They are Tigers in their Constituencies:

They did not raise any such point because they know where to raise it. It is in their home constituencies that they have the calibre to arouse emotions of the uninformed gullible and let loose a political dynamics that shall feed the twitter handles and political commentators of Pakistan and provide her a wherewithal to not only survive in domestic politics that is Kashmir centric, but also create noises in the UN that they know would be of no avail; but the disturbance in the Valley would have been created and that is the Aim of Gupkar Gang.

Is it a Compromised Indian State or Politics of Compromise?

How Indian political leadership can tolerate a political opponent who declares that Pakistan has a stake in Kashmir and/or thanks Pakistan for allowing smooth conduct of elections in erstwhile J&K state? By what historical events, starting from Lahore Declaration of 1940, can a case be made for Pakistan as a stake holder in Kashmir? Those who unhesitatingly have been saying publicly that to have peace in the region Pakistan should be talked to, whose bidding have they been doing? Those who never condemned Pakistan sponsored terrorism how can such political leadership be taken in to confidence for the future of J&K?

Those who day in and day out blame Nehru ji for what they call Kashmir mess are advised to read history and be assured that Nehru ji and Patel Sahab collectively worked for merger of Princely States with the Indian Union and J&K was no exception. To drive a wedge between the two greats of Indian freedom struggle is nothing but an unpardonable act of blasphemy against those whose dust on their feet is more precious than the tallest leader Independent India may have had. Even if one apportions all the blame on Nehru ji, yet he had the courage to dethrone and arrest Sheikh the tallest leader of Kashmiri Muslims and on whose one call thousands would come on to the streets. To think about those times – when India was a nascent union- and yet do such a courageous political act without any untoward repercussions speaks volumes about that leadership for whom the integrity of India was supreme and beyond debate. Those leaders who had all the resources to live a royally comfortable life yet threw out all that option and jumped in to the fray for fight against the British enslavement; the present leadership needs to learn from them- the genius of India from all parts of the Indian sub continent. Those who can’t do only blame others for all the wrong things, but Nehru ji Patel Sahab Gandhi ji C R Das S C Bose Bhagat Singh et al had none to put blame on because they were doers.

So, if Nehru ji could arrest Sheikh, what’s the problem with the present political leadership of India? Whose bidding is being done in entertaining such political personalities who are primary responsible for communalizing and traumatizing Jammu and Kashmir society? If India is a sovereign state who can dictate her terms? The US Russia China UN EU, Who? The Indian political leadership is answerable to the people of India as to why anti social/ national elements are encouraged in the Indian political system.

The Dye is cast:

Those who thought it prudent to bring in to limelight and rejuvenate the political careers of essentially anti national elements have afforded them an immense opportunity to play with the destinies of the people of J&K to bring it to naught; their nefarious designs may take a few decades to unfold like the insurgency in 1990 unfolded.

As on date we can say “All Over bar the Shouting”, unless the Indian political leadership acts decisively.
