Ghulam Nabi Azad has denounced “Kashmir Files” saying Muslim murders were 30 times more than Hindu murders. Mr. Azad for most of the time in his political career represented Maharashtra both as Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha member; only twice he was elected as MLA from his native place. His main contribution to the Indian politics, for which he is remembered even today by his contemporaries, is that he belonged to Sanjay Brigade and was enslaved to him during Emergency and which earned him an epitaph: “Ghulam, Nahi Azad”. On death of Sanjay Gandhi in air crash, he latched on to Rajiv Gandhi & then on to Sonia down to Priyanka. The Indian political system is so degenerate that he has been decorated with Padma Bhushan while his leader Rajiv Gandhi was decorated with Bharat Ratna! When humiliated by Sonia, formed G23 and wore Saffron coloured turban (qualification to get Padma Bhushan?); the same colour that was declared synonymous with “Bhagva Atank” in the Parliament by the party that he was enslaved to.

 Muslims and Pandits got killed for altogether different reasons, as narrated in the sequel.

Why 1991 happened?

 It was not a sudden eruption as was propagated then; nor was it because Muslim United Front had lost State Assembly elections in 1987, due to “wholesale rigging” by the Congress and National Conference (NC); the two were fighting elections as electoral partners. What erupted in 1991 has its genesis in breakup of Pakistan leading to birth of a new country – Bangladesh, in 1971. This event made the Jamait e Islami in Kashmir to resolve to teach India a lesson as it believed that India was responsible for bifurcation of Pakistan. The acceptance of Sheikh Abdullah to his relegation from the PM to CM, in 1975, of the erstwhile State polarized the NC followers towards Jamait e Islami. The Jamait had already started its mission against India and the NC followers joining it gave its purpose a huge boost. The Jamait which was overtly pro Pakistan – unlike other “mainstream” which were covertly so- activated its Pakistani contacts and porous border enabled easy to and fro movement for arms training and religion based indoctrination of Kashmiri Muslims who volunteered to do so. All this was done under “Operation Topaz/Topac” of General Zia Ul Haq of Pakistan.

 It took nearly two decades to achieve total subversion of State machinery that achieved a singular aim of documenting all the details of the Pandits regarding their residential address, office address, number of male and female family members, etc. The Pandits were tagged to execute the plan of their large scale murders, abductions and rape, etc. in order to make them flee the Valley.

 The test case was Anantnag riots of 1988/89 planned and executed by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed- Congress leader; finding no reaction/response to this gruesome act from the Central government, the perpetrators of crimes got immense confidence as they interpreted the silence as no support/sympathy for the Pandits from the GOI.

What happened in 1988 culminated into 1991 was the result of very scientific planning and strategizing for ethnic cleansing in the Valley and that was remarkably successful as it was aided by the powers that be in the State and Center.

 Loud Threats to Convert/Leave Kashmir else face Extinction:

Kashmiri Pandits who resided in the Valley until their forced exodus don’t have to see Kashmir Files because they have gone through the barbarism inflicted on them and it was a live show of the brutality of the majority community. Inspired by their religion and in the name of their religion, ever blurting loud speakers in the mosques threatened the Pandits to convert to Islam or leave Kashmir; the Pandits were told to leave, leaving their womenfolk behind. Notices were pasted on compound walls of Pandits’ residence asking them to leave; the jihadis entered the houses and killed the men and raped/killed the women of the Pandits; what was most unimaginable and disgusting was that those Muslims who had lived as Pandits’ neighbours too relished this barbaric indulgence. The well known/ public figures among the Pandit community were shot dead in broad daylight and not to forget that all these inhuman acts were done in the name of their religion. The frenzied cries of Allah O Akbar reverberated in the firmament and more so in Pandit majority areas.

The Pandits choose to leave their place of home and hearth for saving the honour of their women and girls and save their families from getting extinct as also to retain their faith “Sanatan Dharm”; even if it meant giving up all the comforts of their life and become slum dwellers overnight and refugees in their own country.

So, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Pandits were killed with a purpose and the purpose was to achieve Islamic Kashmir; they were labeled as Indian agents and “jansanghi” for the purpose of inflicting barbarities on them.

Pandits paid a price for being “non believers”; staunch Indians and being followers of Sanatan Dharm and that price was extracted by those who had been living as their neighbours for centuries.

So much for NC and Mufti Sayeed credentials as “mainstream” politicians.

Why Muslims got killed?

 The aim was to cede Kashmir from India and avenge Bangladesh; the flaw in their “Tehreek e Azadi” was that they were fighting a war against India for Pakistan and therefore the Sutr-daar was Pakistan and not local Muslim leadership. In the beginning Pakistan promoted JKLF for two years and on realizing that it stands for independent J&K withdrew the support and started promoting Hizbul Mujahedeen, a pro Pakistan outfit. While Pakistan used locals as a fodder for realizing her “Thousand Cuts” doctrine, the local leaders termed killing of Muslims as “sacrifice” for the cause and for the purpose of “internationalizing” the Kashmir issue. Reproducing excerpts from Javed Ahmed Mir’s 2003 interview with a correspondent will tell it all. Javed Mir was Vice Chairman of JKLF.

Q. Your organization was the first one in Kashmir which introduced armed freedom struggle in Kashmir. Your cadres asked the youth to fight India. What do you feel is the role of gun now when various foreigners have also joined in?

A. Twelve years ago, Kashmir was no issue globally. Armed freedom struggle was necessary to infuse a new life into it. We had no option but to resort to gun as no one was giving heed to our plight. So we took to gun, which brought Kashmir issue into limelight. The Kashmir issue is out of cold storage and everyone in the world talks about it. With at least 80,000 people have been killed, hundreds of women raped, thousands of youth killed in custody, many of them subjected to forced disappearance, Kashmiris cannot suffer for long. So we believe that enough is enough, gun has played its role, our job is done and blood bath in Kashmir should stop now. (Sic)

Though many of his claims are subject to verification, he admits that gun culture has caused so many deaths. His reply also tells us, how uninformed he is about J&K issue.

Q. What about reports of strong differences between JKLF and All Party Hurriat Conference?

A. JKLF is a constituent of Hurriat. We are part and parcel of conglomerate and played an important role in its formation. So the question of differences doesn’t arise at all. Besides, if there are some differences, one should realize that if there are as many as 80,000 sacrifices of the Kashmiri people, differences are bound to be there. (Sic)

Here he talks of sacrifice. The incongruity inbuilt in the conglomeration he justifies in that SAS Geelani stood for merger with Pakistan while JKLF wanted independent J&K State!

Was it Ignorance about Indian State or Blind Faith in Pak’s might to cede Kashmir from India?

It was both. The Kashmiri Muslims genuinely believed, as they were promised by their Sutr-daar from across the border, that once they succeeded in laying seize of Srinagar for a number of days the Pak army would cross the border to liberate Kashmir from India. They didn’t have any idea of the might of Indian State, when it came to protecting India’s integrity. Their blind faith in the Pak’s capability to free them from “Kafir” rule that was rooted in religion based political indoctrination disabled them to see the other side of the same coin. India and Pakistan are fundamentally Nation States and hence two sides of the same coin. It is their first duty to protect their boundaries no matter how many lives are lost and while one may attack the other will defend going all the way out. The religion based indoctrination was so intoxicating that the Kashmiri Muslims forgot the results of the three wars between the two neighbours.

Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad and other depraved politicians of his ilk should know that no Nation State offers sweets to those who rise in revolt against it; the LTTE and Sri Lankan government’s response to their separatism is well documented; therefore the Indian State was only discharging its duty by taking the insurgents head on. Nothing comes free on this Earth as this secular world is governed by the Cause – Effect doctrine. There is no reason for Muslims to complain as they waged a war against the State and were duly dealt with and ended up by paying price by way of “sacrifice” or “murders”.

So, the Muslims got killed in the process where armed revolt was to be crushed by State power very much like the annihilation of Naxalites.

Therefore the Muslims should ask their leaders like JKLF HM NC Cong etc for the trauma they went through and not remain in denial mode about what was done to the Pandits. They must hold them responsible for dehumanization of their community and ask where was the need to sacrifice 80,000 to internationalize Kashmir when it was already internationalized as it was lying in the UN for resolution and when Pakistan was solely responsible for non resolution, through UN, of what has come to be known as “Kashmir Problem”.
